Daytrip Keszthely and Csillagvár

A combination of art (Keszthely) and culture (Csillagvár).

In Keszthely a visit to the Festetics castle is recommended. The exterior and the interior give a rich impression and belong to one of the most beautiful architectures of the 18th century. The wonderful music hall and the library were designed by master carpenter János Kerbl. The best known room is the Helikon library with a collection of 90.000 books. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and you can take a look in the coach house that has an exhibition of old carriages.

The castle has been named after Count György Festetics who founded the first Higher Agricultural School in Europe in the 18th century.

On the way back to our campsite, you could visit Csillagvár in Balatonszentgyörgy which is half an hour drive from Kesthely.

The star-shaped building is unique in the world and has been re-built on the original foundation. In the building there are various rooms with situations from the Middle Ages: the captain of the guard, a smoky kitchen and a torture room. On one of the upper floors there is a large collection of dolls in Hungarian traditional costume. There is a small petting zoo, a place for drinks and an open-air museum with all sorts of hand tools from the past. The open-air museum is small and cosy. Opening times: from 10.00-18.00 hours in June, July and August, and in October (2016) from 10.00-16.00 hours. After that the museum closes until the next year in March.
